The General Dental Council has published further guidance documents ahead of the introduction of Enhanced Continuing Professional Development for General Dental Practitioners from 01 January 2018.
The changes to CPD were proposed in the GDC’s consultation Shifting the Balance earlier this year and were outlined over the summer. The key changes involve registrants having to:
- have a personal development plan (PDP)
- submit more hours of verifiable CPD, more evenly spread over a five year period
- no longer submit any non-verifiable CPD
- make an annual declaration on the hours of CPD undertaken, even if that amount is zero
The changes to CPD may cause some practitioners to be subject to both the old and new requirements before the entire cycle for all registrants restarts in 2022. To help practitioners part way through a current cycle the GDC has developed a transitional toolkit.
Dental Care Professionals will move to the new system from August 2018.
