London Assembly Health Committee Dental Enquiry

Nikita Vora, Director for Brent at the North West London LDC, provided evidence to the London Assembly’s Health Committee enquiry on dental access on 17 July on behalf of the LDC Confederation.

The London Assembly’s Health Committee recently confirmed their work programme and their first priority was to look at dentistry in London. At this evidence session (the first of several), the Committee asked the panel general questions about access and the issues facing patients from the perspective of the profession.  After providing a brief outline about the dental contract and national trends, the panel discussed barriers to access including how UDAs are not a proxy for access and not a sufficient indicator of care being provided. Prevention, and access for children were also highlighted as key issues for the Committee who were interested in supervised toothbrushing schemes and whether stronger local community links could be forged.

Other speakers on the panel included Natalie Bradley, Chair of the BDA’s Young Dentists’ Committee and Elizabeth Fisher, Senior Fellow from the Nuffield Trust. The second evidence session of the day featured representatives from NHS England’s Primary Care Team in London, who were questioned about access and barriers to access facing certain groups in London.

The full recording of both evidence sessions is available to watch on the London Assembly website.

A further evidence session is expected in September with a wider call for written evidence over the summer.
