Helen Hayes MP (Dulwich and West Norwood) met with George Brown SEL LDC Director for Lambeth on 21 November to discuss NHS dentistry in her constituency.
Issues discussed included the impact on practice finances of the recent budget, the need for improved guidance on flexible commissioning, the lack of access to NHS benefits for other members of the dental team and the ultimate need for a reformed contract.
There was an in depth discussion about the future of the NHS in light of the Government’s current consultation on the topic. This covered the potential improvements to health that would be delivered with increased integration of NHS dental services and what this would require, including better IT connectivity and alterations to the dental contract.
Helen was concerned about the future of NHS dentistry and how dentists can be encouraged to retain their NHS commitment until a reformed contract is implemented. It was wonderful to see such a level of warm engagement, concern for dentists and their teams, as well as a firm belief in the need to protect NHS dental services for constituents.
The meeting concluded with agreements that the LDC would continue to provide clear information about dental services to stakeholders and the public, while Helen would raise issues of access and working with the LDC with the South East London Integrated Care Board.
We look forward to continuing this relationship and ensuring that Helen is well informed about the issues affecting NHS dental practice and how these can be resolved.
